During production, Song O’ My Heart was known by the alternative title I Hear You Calling Me, named after one of the songs associated with John McCormack.

AFI records I Hear You Calling Me as the film’s alternate title and reports that production had begun under that name.

JOHN McCORMACK’S FIRST FEATURE FILM

Song O’ My Heart marked John McCormack’s first feature-film appearance.

Even more remarkably, AFI notes that it was the only film in which McCormack portrayed a fictional character.

He later appeared as himself in Wings of the Morning in 1937, but Song O’ My Heart remains his unique starring dramatic role.

A HALF-MILLION-DOLLAR STAR

John McCormack was not simply another singer hired by a Hollywood studio.

According to modern sources cited by AFI, after months of negotiations McCormack received an extraordinary $500,000 salary for appearing in the picture—a remarkable sum for the period.

The studio clearly regarded his international fame and celebrated tenor voice as a major attraction for movie audiences newly fascinated by the possibilities of synchronized sound.

MAUREEN O’SULLIVAN’S FILM DEBUT

The picture is also historically important for another reason.

Song O’ My Heart marked the motion-picture debut of Maureen O’Sullivan.

O’Sullivan was hired while the company was filming in Ireland and later completed her role in the United States. She remained in America and eventually became one of MGM’s familiar stars, particularly through her portrayal of Jane opposite Johnny Weissmuller in the studio’s Tarzan films.

For Maureen O’Sullivan collectors, this film therefore represents the very beginning of her long screen career.

ACTUALLY FILMED IN IRELAND

Unlike many Hollywood films that attempted to recreate foreign settings entirely on studio backlots, significant portions of Song O’ My Heart were actually photographed in Ireland.

Exterior scenes were filmed around Lusk near Dublin and on the grounds of Moore Abbey, John McCormack’s own estate near Monasterevin in County Kildare.

Director Frank Borzage, McCormack, writer Tom Barry, actor J. M. Kerrigan and members of the production crew traveled to Ireland for filming.

The exposed footage was reportedly sent to a laboratory in London for processing and then returned to Dublin so Borzage could review the material before production eventually continued at the Fox Movietone Studios in Hollywood.

That genuine Irish photography adds considerable historical interest to the picture.

FILMED IN BOTH 35MM AND 70MM GRANDEUR

One of the most remarkable technical aspects of Song O’ My Heart is that it was photographed in both conventional 35mm and Fox’s large-format 70mm Grandeur process.

Grandeur was one of Hollywood’s fascinating early experiments with widescreen filmmaking—more than two decades before widescreen processes became standard theater attractions during the 1950s.

This gives Song O’ My Heart an additional place in the history of early large-format cinema.

EARLY COLOR EXPERIMENTATION

Contemporary reporting cited by AFI also announced that the production had been made using the Foxcolor process. AFI nevertheless catalogs the surviving film’s physical property as black and white.

As with many films from this transitional period, original production and exhibition elements do not necessarily survive today exactly as audiences encountered them in 1930.

When Song O’ My Heart was made, synchronized talking pictures were still a relatively new attraction.

Studios were eager to demonstrate what sound could bring to motion pictures, and internationally celebrated singers such as John McCormack suddenly offered Hollywood something silent films could never provide audiences—the opportunity to both see and hear a famous performer.

Fox went even further by taking part of the production to Ireland and photographing the picture in both standard 35mm and experimental 70mm Grandeur formats.

Song O’ My Heart was released in the United States in 1930. AFI records its copyright registration to Fox Film Corporation on February 11, 1930 and its general release date as September 7, 1930.

Duke Law’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain confirms that works from 1930 became open to the public in the United States on that date.
