Phantoms of the Silent Cinema

Ghosts, Monsters & Madmen — 12 Silent Horror Movies DVD Collection

Enter the shadowy world of silent horror, where haunted carriages travel through the night, vampires stalk sleeping villages, mad doctors experiment with the human soul, and distorted dreamscapes conceal murder and insanity.

Phantoms of the Silent Cinema brings together 12 landmark silent films filled with supernatural terror, Gothic atmosphere, Expressionist imagery, monsters, occult forces and dangerously disturbed minds. These films helped establish the visual language of horror long before screams could be heard from the screen.

The 12 Silent Films

1. Dante’s Inferno (1911)

A spectacular early Italian production inspired by Dante’s journey through the circles of Hell. Grotesque demons, tormented souls and enormous supernatural sets create one of silent cinema’s earliest visions of cinematic horror.

2. The Student of Prague (1913)

A poor student makes a mysterious bargain that brings him wealth and romance—but separates him from his own reflection. His sinister double soon begins haunting him and destroying his life.

3. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

A sinister carnival hypnotist commands a sleepwalking servant to carry out a series of murders. Its twisted sets, painted shadows and nightmarish story made this German Expressionist production one of silent horror’s defining films.

4. The Golem: How He Came into the World (1920)

A rabbi creates a towering clay guardian to defend his community from persecution. When the magical creature escapes its creator’s control, protector and monster become frighteningly difficult to distinguish.

5. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)

A respected physician experiments with separating humanity’s virtuous and evil impulses. The experiment unleashes Mr. Hyde, a violent alter ego who becomes increasingly difficult to control.

6. The Phantom Carriage (1921)

According to an old legend, the final person to die before the New Year must drive Death’s ghostly carriage and collect the souls of the dead. A troubled man is forced to confront the damage caused by his cruel and reckless life.

7. Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922)

A young clerk travels to the remote castle of Count Orlok, an ancient vampire whose arrival brings terror, death and plague to a quiet seaside town. Max Schreck’s unforgettable vampire remains one of silent cinema’s most haunting monsters.

8. Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922)

A strange and visually daring exploration of witchcraft, superstition, demonic possession and medieval persecution. Dramatic recreations present devils, covens, forbidden rituals and grotesque supernatural visions.

9. Warning Shadows (1923)

Jealousy and suppressed desire threaten to erupt into murder during a gathering at a secluded manor. A mysterious shadow player gives the guests a frightening vision of the violent future they may create.

10. The Hands of Orlac (1924)

After a terrible accident, a concert pianist receives transplanted hands believed to have belonged to an executed murderer. He becomes convinced that the hands possess a murderous will of their own.

11. The Phantom of the Opera (1925)

A mysterious masked figure living beneath the Paris Opera House becomes obsessed with a young singer. Lon Chaney’s extraordinary portrayal of the Phantom helped make this lavish Gothic production an enduring horror classic.

12. Faust (1926)

A desperate scholar bargains with the demon Mephisto in exchange for youth, knowledge and power. F. W. Murnau fills the screen with supernatural transformations, flying demons, plague, temptation and monumental visions of good battling evil.
