She’s My Weakness 1930 DVD Sue Carol Arthur Lake Rare Pre-Code Romantic Comedy

SHE’S MY WEAKNESS (1930)

Rare Pre-Code Romantic Comedy • Sue Carol • Arthur Lake

Discover another seldom-seen treasure from the earliest years of Hollywood sound cinema with She’s My Weakness (1930), a charming Pre-Code romantic comedy starring Sue Carol and Arthur Lake.

Released during the exciting transition from silent pictures to full-fledged talking films, She’s My Weakness combines romance, family complications, rival suitors and a troublesome real-estate deal into a lighthearted early Hollywood comedy.

Arthur Lake stars as Tommy Mills, a young man hoping to marry his sweetheart, Marie Thurber, played by Sue Carol. Tommy believes his financial problems may finally be solved when he inherits a piece of property that he can sell. Unfortunately, Marie's father is facing financial problems of his own and also desperately needs to sell property.

When both parcels of land become involved in the same proposed civic transaction, misunderstandings begin piling up.

Adding to Tommy's troubles is Bernard Norton, another man interested in Marie. Manipulation, confusion and questionable advice soon make Tommy appear responsible for a situation he was actually trying to fix.

Romance hangs in the balance as Tommy struggles to clear up the mess, prove his intentions and win back the woman he loves.

With its young stars, fast-moving romantic complications and unmistakable early-talkie atmosphere, She’s My Weakness is a wonderful choice for collectors who enjoy discovering the lesser-known films of Pre-Code Hollywood.

AFI classifies the picture as a romantic comedy and records a running time of approximately 70 minutes.

ALTERNATE TITLE & FILM CURIOSITIES

Alternate Title: TOMMY

Before receiving its familiar release title, She’s My Weakness was produced under the working title Tommy.

That name came directly from the 1927 Broadway stage play Tommy by Howard Lindsay and Bertrand Robinson, which provided the source material for the motion picture.

The title change to She’s My Weakness was announced during production in April 1930.

A BROADWAY CONNECTION

Actor Alan Bunce, who plays rival suitor Bernard Norton in the film, had also appeared in the stage production and reprised his role for the motion-picture adaptation.

SUE CAROL AND RKO

Lead actress Sue Carol was borrowed from Fox Film Corporation for the production. AFI notes that after filming was completed and her Fox contract ended, she signed a five-year contract with RKO.

A VETERAN CHARACTER ACTOR

Contemporary reporting cited by AFI stated that She’s My Weakness may have marked Lucien Littlefield's 100th motion-picture role, an impressive milestone during an era when character actors could appear in dozens of productions within only a few years.

MADE DURING HOLLYWOOD’S EARLY SOUND REVOLUTION

Rehearsals were underway by March 1930 and principal photography followed in April. The picture therefore comes from one of Hollywood's most fascinating transitional periods, when studios were rapidly developing new techniques for dialogue, music and synchronized sound production.

PLEASE NOTE — VINTAGE FILM QUALITY

She’s My Weakness was produced in 1930, and surviving material for films of this age can vary considerably in condition.

Rare vintage films should not be expected to look like newly restored modern Blu-ray or contemporary digital productions.

Depending upon the surviving source material, viewers may occasionally notice:

  • Film grain

  • Light scratches

  • Print marks

  • Contrast fluctuations

  • Brightness changes

  • Audio hiss

  • Volume variations

  • Minor splices

  • Other imperfections associated with surviving vintage film elements

These characteristics may originate with the surviving film source and do not necessarily indicate a defective DVD.

Our goal with rare and difficult-to-find material is to provide collectors with the best available presentation reasonably accessible from surviving source material.

For collectors of obscure cinema, being able to see a forgotten film again is often part of the enjoyment of preserving and collecting vintage motion pictures.

WHY ADD THIS FILM TO YOUR COLLECTION?

Many classic-movie collectors eventually discover that the same famous Hollywood titles are released repeatedly.

The real adventure begins when you move beyond those familiar movies and start discovering the films that have nearly disappeared from popular memory.

She’s My Weakness offers exactly that kind of collecting opportunity.

This is an especially interesting title for collectors of:

  • Pre-Code Hollywood

  • Early Talking Pictures

  • 1930 Movies

  • Rare Romantic Comedies

  • Sue Carol Films

  • Arthur Lake Films

  • Early RKO Productions

  • Stage-to-Screen Adaptations

  • Forgotten Hollywood

  • Early Sound Cinema

  • Golden Age Movies

  • Obscure Classic Films

  • Hard-to-Find Motion Pictures

Arthur Lake would later become especially familiar to movie and television audiences through his long association with Dagwood Bumstead, making this early starring appearance an interesting look at his career before those later roles.
