SEO TITLE

Shadow of the Law 1930 DVD William Powell Pre-Code Crime Drama Rare Film

SHADOW OF THE LAW (1930)

Rare Pre-Code Crime Drama Starring William Powell

Step back into the early years of talking pictures with Shadow of the Law (1930), a gripping and seldom-seen Pre-Code crime melodrama starring William Powell several years before his celebrated appearances as Nick Charles in The Thin Man films.

Powell stars as Jim Montgomery, an innocent man whose attempt to protect a woman from a violent attacker ends disastrously. When the attacker falls to his death and the only woman who can confirm Montgomery's story disappears, he is convicted of murder and sentenced to prison.

After escaping and establishing a new life under another identity, Montgomery appears to have finally left his past behind. But freedom proves temporary. The missing witness resurfaces, blackmail enters the picture, and the law begins closing in.

Shadow of the Law combines crime, wrongful conviction, prison drama, romance, blackmail and suspense into a fascinating example of early Hollywood crime filmmaking.

For collectors of William Powell, Pre-Code films, early talkies, obscure crime pictures and rarely available 1930s cinema, this is a particularly interesting title to add to a classic-film library.

FILM NOTES & CURIOSITIES

Shadow of the Law comes from a particularly fascinating moment in Hollywood history—the beginning of the sound era and the period now remembered as Pre-Code Hollywood.

William Powell was already an established screen actor in 1930, but this film predates the sophisticated detective and comedy roles that would make him one of Hollywood's most recognizable stars.

The film was based on The Quarry, a story by John A. Moroso that was also adapted for the stage.

The movie also features cinematography by Charles Lang, who would become one of Hollywood's most respected cinematographers.

Its themes of wrongful conviction, prison escape, hidden identity, blackmail and a man desperately attempting to prove his innocence give the picture a surprisingly modern crime-story structure.

For collectors who enjoy discovering films beyond the handful of Golden Age titles that are repeatedly released, Shadow of the Law is an excellent example of the lesser-seen side of early 1930s Hollywood.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT VINTAGE FILM QUALITY

This motion picture is approaching a century in age.

Our goal is to provide the best available presentation from surviving source material, but buyers should understand that rare vintage films may contain characteristics associated with surviving archival material, including occasional scratches, film grain, contrast variations, audio fluctuations, splices or other age-related imperfections.

These characteristics are part of the history of vintage cinema and should not be confused with defects in the DVD itself.

For many rare films, surviving prints vary considerably in condition. Whenever possible, we select the best material reasonably available to us.
