TWO COMEDIANS — ONE UNFORGETTABLE PARTNERSHIP

Stan Laurel’s innocent confusion and childlike manner were the perfect contrast to Oliver Hardy’s dignity, impatience, and increasingly frustrated attempts to remain in control.

A simple task could become a monumental disaster.

Selling a Christmas tree could result in the destruction of a house.

Installing an antenna could become a neighborhood catastrophe.

A traffic jam could turn into an automobile demolition derby.

An innocent misunderstanding could quickly involve angry wives, policemen, landlords, criminals, sailors, prison guards, or practically anyone unfortunate enough to cross their path.

The situations changed, but the formula was magical.

Laurel & Hardy understood that some of the funniest comedy comes not from rushing to the next joke, but from allowing a disaster to develop slowly while the audience realizes exactly how much worse things are about to become.

FROM SILENT FILMS TO TALKING PICTURES

This collection also provides a fascinating look at one of Hollywood’s most important transitions.

Laurel & Hardy were already accomplished visual comedians during the silent era. Their comedy depended on facial expressions, physical timing, elaborate sight gags, and beautifully constructed situations.

When talking pictures arrived, their comedy became even richer.

Audiences could finally hear Stan’s confused explanations, Ollie’s increasingly irritated responses, their arguments, songs, cries of frustration, and the wonderfully awkward pauses that became trademarks of their screen personalities.

Few comedy teams moved from silent pictures into sound as naturally or successfully.

THE WORLD OF LAUREL & HARDY

Across these films you will encounter the wonderfully chaotic world that surrounds Stan and Ollie:

• Angry wives
• Suspicious policemen
• Broken automobiles
• Hotel disasters
• Prison escapes
• Sailors and soldiers
• Haunted houses
• Mistaken identities
• Unsuccessful businesses
• Destructive home repairs
• Impossible jobs
• Furious neighbors
• Elaborate misunderstandings
• Collapsing furniture
• And plenty of very fine messes!

Their comedy remains remarkably accessible because the humor comes from personalities and situations that audiences still recognize today.

EARLY AND RARE APPEARANCES

Long before Laurel & Hardy became an established team, both comedians had already accumulated extensive screen experience.

This collection includes material representing those earlier years as well, allowing collectors to see the development of their individual comedy styles before their famous partnership became firmly established.

These early appearances provide a fascinating glimpse into the careers of two performers who would eventually become one of cinema’s most famous comedy teams.
