Devil’s Cargo (1948) continues the adventures of private detective Michael Shayne in this atmospheric noir mystery starring Hugh Beaumont (later of Leave It to Beaver). When a simple missing-person case turns deadly, Shayne uncovers a trail of blackmail, murder, and smuggling that leads deep into the underworld.
Directed by John F. Link Sr. and produced by Arthur Alexander, this is one of the best of the late-1940s B-crime thrillers. Fast-paced, filled with witty dialogue and moody shadows, it’s a gem of classic detective cinema from the Monogram Pictures era.
